SPENCER, Wis (WSAU) – – The small central Wisconsin town of Spencer has given many of its young men and women for service to their country over the years. For that reason, project organizer Jerry Weinke says it’s only fitting that a new Spencer Veterans’ Memorial is being planned. As recently as 2012, five high school grads from the small town enlisted, and Weinke says, “That’s a unique situation!” The design planned for the new memorial is a star with a flag on each corner to represent the five branches of military service. Weinke says United States, State of Wisconsin, and P.O.W. flags will also be part of the tribute, along with a gazebo and benches. The location for the memorial was chosen for its high visibility on the corner of Highways 13 and 98, where more than 8,000 vehicles per day will see the tribute. Organizers have groundbreaking for the project scheduled for Memorial Day, with dedication of the new memorial tentatively slated for the Fourth of July. To contribute to the project and to find out more about the Founding Donors Plaque, please email Jerry Weinke at jwienke4586@charter.net or call the village of Spencer at 715-659-5423.
