MADISON, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Whitefish Bay Dominican set a Division-Four state tournament scoring record last night with a 93-to-54 win over Eau Claire Regis at the semi-finals in Madison.
Diamond Stone had 33 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocked shots for Dominican, which shot 61-percent in the first half and led by 25 at the break. Billy Wampler had 19 points and eight boards for Eau Claire Regis, which went into the tournament unbeaten. Dominican will try to become only the second school to win four consecutive state titles tomorrow, when it plays Mineral Point in the D-Four championship game.
Mineral Point improved to 27-and-0 with a 66-to-59 semi-final victory over Auburndale. The Apaches jumped out to an 8-nothing lead, but Mineral Point took control late in the third quarter and led by as many as 14 in the final period. Terek Olllerich had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Pointers. Auburndale lost despite shooting 60-percent.
In Division-Five, a pair of first-timers to the state tournament will go for the title tomorrow. Hillsboro advanced to the finals by edging Green Bay-Northeast Wisconsin Lutheran 59-57. Young Coggs Prep of Milwaukee won its semi-final over Washburn yesterday 59-to-48.
Hillsboro survived a tight game which had 12 lead changes and ten ties against a Lutheran team that was the state runner-up the previous two seasons. Max Stockwell scored 17 for Hillsboro, which improved to 23-and-5.
Young Coggs Prep improved to 22-and-5 with its semi-final win. It broke a 43-all tie by scoring the final six points of the third quarter, and used a 10-nothing run in the final period to ice its victory. Tiwon Jones scored 29 for Young Coggs Prep. Washburn shot 55-percent. More semi-finals are on tap today in the top three divisions. Defending champion Brown Deer kicks things off at 9:05 against Prescott in the Division-Three semis. Appleton Xavier plays East Troy in the other semi. This afternoon, it’s the Division-Two semi-finals as Rice Lake faces Greendale, and Mount Horeb takes on West DePere. Tonight, Stevens Point clashes with West Allis Central in the Division-One semis. The day wraps up with unbeaten Germantown — also going for four straight titles — as it takes on Madison East.
