STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) — An observant delivery driver was able to awaken people at a Stevens Point home, where the garage had caught fire. Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Davis says the fire was at a residence on Minnesota Avenue, and started at around 3:40 a.m.
Davis says a UPS driver on his way to their distribution center near the house noticed what looked like a flashing red light inside of the garage. The driver parked his truck at the distribution center and walked over to check it out. That’s when he found fire inside the garage.
The house had several people who had just finished playing UW Stevens Point’s annual trivia contest, and some people were sleeping in a recreational vehicle in the driveway. The UPS driver woke up the people in the RV and then the house. Everyone got out safely.
Davis says the RV was plugged into the house with an extension cord through the garage. Investigators are at the house looking for the cause of the fire, but they believe the extension cord may have overheated.
