UNDATED (WSAU) — Several fires kept local fire departments and DNR firefighters busy over the weekend.
No one was injured in a grass fire on Barker Stewart Island in Wausau on Saturday afternoon. Wausau Fire Department officials said everyone on the island at the time of the fire was able to evacuate safely. The fire broke out around 5 p.m. The fire did not cause any serious damage to the area.
A fire early Saturday has damaged a Wisconsin Rapids home. Officials were called to a home on the 300 block of 12th Street North around 2:45 a.m., but the flames were out when the crew arrived. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. No one was injured.
Merrill firefighters were called to Pier Street and North Star Road shortly after midnight Sunday morning for a large grass fire that was spreading rapidly. The DNR was called in for assistance, and Tomahawk EMS was put on stand-by in Irma. About 1/3 of an acre burned vegetation. No buildings were nearby.
Also in Lincoln County, Town of Russell Firefighters along with Deputies responded to a fire Friday evening. At 8:30 PM a 911 caller reported a farm tractor on fire at an address on County Rd J. When a Deputy arrived on the scene a short time later he found the fire was out. Firefighters cooled off the engine of the tractor which started on fire as it was being driven.
Tomahawk Firefighters along with the DNR, a Deputy and Tomahawk Police all responded to a grass fire on Saturday morning. The fire was reported off of Kaphaem Rd at the city of Tomahawk / Town of Bradley line. When firefighters arrived the small fire had already been put out by a passerby.
A fire forced a highway to be detoured in Waupaca County Sunday. Firefighters were called at 3:37 p.m. to Highway 161 near Manawa. Traffic was detoured using Highway 110, Ferg Road and Zabel Road for over five hours.
