MOSINEE, Wis. (WXPR) — In the past five years, the Wisconsin Never Forgotten Honor Flight has taken nearly 2,100 veterans to see the memorials and other sites in Washington, D.C. The next flight leaves Monday with 16 World War Two, 39 Korean War, and 39 Vietnam War veterans on the flight. The flight provides a one-day trip for veterans and caregivers.
Co-founder Jim Campbell says as the 23 flight leaves today, the composition of veterans changes. “In the last couple of years we’ve had veterans from three generations on the flight. The numbers vary. Each flight has different numbers of WWII and Korea veterans as there are fewer and fewer as we move forward.”
Sixty four guardians will accompany the vets on the one-day round trip that departs Central Wisconsin Airport. Campbell says as more Vietnam veterans join the flights fewer caregivers are needed.
The Never Forgotten Honor Flight Hub based in Wausau serves veterans in Marathon, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Iron, Price and five other northern and central Wisconsin counties.The Wausau based organization was certified by the National Honor Flight Network office on December 11, 2009.
