GREEN BAY, WI (WAOW) When the Packers cut Peter Mortell on Monday, everyone assumed that meant veteran punter Tim Masthay had won the starting job, but Ted Thompson and company announced Tuesday afternoon that Masthay has been released after six seasons in Green Bay.
In a corresponding move, the Packers signed former Buccaneers punter Jacob Schum, who spent the 2015 season with Tampa Bay, averaging 42 yards per punt.
The Packers also released wide receiver Harvey Binford on Tuesday, and placed five players on injured reserve – most notably running back John Crockett, who injured his shoulder during Friday’s game in San Francisco.
Tight ends Kennard Backman and Mitchell Henry and offensive linemen Jacob Flores and Josh Walker were also placed on IR.
Teams were required to have their rosters down to 75 players by Tuesday. The final roster cutdown to 53 players is on Saturday.
