EVERYTHING EVERGREENS (FOX SPORTS WAUSAU-WSAU) – Even though the winter sports season has just begun, it's not too soon to share some impressions about three Everest teams.
Boys basketball: Riley Peterson will thrive in the team's new, fast-paced offense. As a sophomore and junior Riley was an average-plus player who sometimes had quieter half-court games than his talent level. Now that the team is looking to play up-tempo games and is looking for transition baskets, Riley will get to show off all his skills. He opened his senior season with 29 points against Green Bay East, and some of his best plays were assists to his teammates. It was one of the best individual games for an Everest basketball player in years.
Girls basketball: This sounds like a backhanded compliment; it's not intended that way… one sign of a good team is the ability to win while not playing its best. The Everest girls have had long stretches of inconsistent play in all of their games this season, and yet they've won 3 out of 4. They'll have a height advantage against everyone they'll play for the rest of the season… and they'll compete with Wausau West and Marshfield for the conference title. The team that goes 3-1 against those opponents will win the Valley. Everest will need to play better to beat 3-0 Milwaukee Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
Hockey: Their season-opening overtime win over Northland Pines showed grit. They were expected to beat Ashwaubenon, and did, 6-2. Just like last season, Everest is beating the teams they're supposed to beat — nothing wrong with that. The question for this team is can they upset some of the teams they're not supposed to beat. One of those opportunities is coming up Friday against University School, the 8th ranked team in the state. Tomorrow's game will be on Fox Sports AM-1390 FM-93.9 at 7pm.
