Tomorrow is National Record Store Day. One of my favorite memories is spending an afternoon in a big record store. Just browsing thru the stacks…new reccords, used records, Lps, 45's…it didnt matter. Discovering stuff you heard on the radio or maybe just read about and had never heard before. Spending hours reading liner notes (when those were a big deal) and enjoying the amazing art work on the album covers. All the while some great music would be playing thru the store speakers. Wausau has been blessed to have an excellent (if small) record store for decades. Mike Capista found his calling a long time ago and Inner Sleeve Records have provided our area with tons of great music. He opened the store when he got tired of not finding music he wanted in the area and having to go to Madison or Milwaukee to get his music. When I was a kid in the 60's, Inner Sleeve wasnt open yet so we got our music at various places. Department stores like Arlans and later Pranges had small record sections. Wrights Music store (where Prima Deli is now) also had records along with their large selection of musical instruments and sheet music. But it was Bob's Musical Isle in downtown Wausau where most of us got our fix. Bob's was a dusty, crowded shop which featured stereos, radios and other sound equipment but for us it was the record section that drew most of the attention. Lots of the latest albums and a large vending machine that dispensed 45's. You put in your 50 cents (or whatever they cost…I cant seem to remember) and out popped the latest hit from the Beatles, the Monkees, Paul Revere and the Raiders or whatever artist was ruling the charts. LP's were just becoming a thing in the mid 60's and they cost like 3 bucks or more (which was a ton of cash for a 10 year old). The first 45 I ever bought was Lil Red Riding Hood by Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs
I didnt even understand all the double entendres in the song…but I played it over and over again probably driving my mom crazy. I still have the first two LPs I bought at Bob's….both by Paul Revere & The Raiders. To this day I remember the crowded aisles at that store and the good times that were spent there. I will always make a stop when in the Twin Cities to the Cheapo-Cheapo Records store on Snelling Avenue and a new place recently discovered called Barely Brothers Records. In case you are not aware vinyl is making a comeback so re-vist those days of your youth or in the case of the youngsters, go hear what real music sounds like (not the compressed digital stuff we have become used to). Happy Record Store Day…may they live on!
The Green Bay Packer schedule has been released. They play 3 of the first four at home. They also have a number of night games…a couple of Sunday nights…one Monday night and one dreaded Thursday night. They also have a Saturday night game Christmas weekend. You can find the complete schedule in the sports section of this website.
The Bucks had six players in double figures last night as they hammered the Raptors to take a 2-1 lead in their playoff series. The Raptors had no answers for the endless stream of long-armed Bucks who have disrupted their offense for much of this series so far. Game four is Saturday in Milwaukee.
It was a happy night in Milwaukee as the Brewers beat the Cardinals too. Eric Thames and Travis Shaw both had homers. Those guys are certainly making the Brewers front office look good as they continue to rake.
How bout the Nashville Predators making history? Theya re the first #8 seed to ever sweep a number 1 seed in any professional sport. They dispatched the Black Hawks easily. Isn't that one of the reasons we watch sports…to possibly see something we never have before?
Also the Cavaliers overcame a 25 point halftime deficit to beat Indiana. The biggest comeback in NBA playoff history. Lebron was a monster…41 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists.
If you are a Wisconsin Woodchucks fan be aware that single game tickets go on sale today. That includes tickets to the Northwoods League All-Star game which will be in Wausau this year. Go to woodchucks.com or call 715 845-5055.
Elections have consequences… Trump received $1 million from Dow Chemical and now they want him to toss a study on pesticides that says a family of widely used pesticides critcally threaten 1800 endangered species. The Dow CEO is an advisor for Trump and Trump's anti-science EPA head Scott Pruitt has already announced the reversal of rules in place to bar certain chemicals from being used on our food. Sometime in our history these guys will be seen for what they are…killers….Here in Wisconsin the right-wing controlled Supreme Court doesnt even try to hide their perfidy anymore. Yesterday they rejected a proposal to recuse themselves from cases involving those who spent money on their campaigns. The rule change was propose by 54 retired jurists. Only Abrahamson and Ann Walsh Bradley voted for the proposal. I guess if you think these “judges” can honestly rule on these sorts of cases then there isnt a problem. The cynic in me says no…the Wisconsin Supreme Court is now bought and paid for by the big money interests regardless of the negative effects on the rest of us. Conflicts of Interest…from the White House on down to State Supreme Courts like here are no longer considered a problem in Trumps America. This could be the lasting legacy of this administration and its a terrible one.
