Many people will only know Frank Schade as the long-time high school basketball coach at Oshkosh North High School. He has coached at North for 31 seasons and his teams have advanced to the State Tournament five times. He also coached at Plymouth High School for 11 seasons compiling a total record of 609-316. The 609 is the fourth highest in state history. But for those of us who grew up in Wausau back in the 60's Schade will always be remembered for his playing days as a sharp-shooting guard on some really good Wausau High School teams. The Lumberjacks were State runner-ups in 1967 when Frank was a junior. Old Wausonians will also remember his dad's tavern which was a fixture on the corner of 6th street and Park Avenue for years. Schade's talents led him to college stardom…he was recruited by by the legendary Don Haskins at UTEP but ended up playing for his old high school coach Ken Anderson as he helped UW-Eau Claire make it to the NAIA Title game in 1972 once again finishing second. He was drafted by the Kansas City Kings in the 1972 NBA draft and played one season backing up Tiny Archibald. I think he's Wausau's only NBA player. He didnt want to make a big deal of his retirement so he didnt mention it until now wanting. as always, to make the season about the players. As someone who has coached a sport for a,long time I realize the difficulty in finally stepping away. Now comes the next chapter but who would be surprised if he's not in ther stands next season as Oshkosh North will lace em up with a new head man for the first time in 31 years. After being in a gym every year since the early 60's how could he not.
Wausau East high school history teacher Brent Zinkel was named Teacher Of The Year in Wisconsin yesterday. He received the honor in a surprise ceremony at the school. Herb Kohl co-sponsors the Teacher of The Year program through his foundation. Zinkel coaches swimming and cross country and has also developed a curriculum for students learning English.
The Bucks rallied but came of short and were eliminated last night. They were down 25 but came back and lost by 3. Giannis didn't get alot of help last night but once again he was special. It will be interesting to see if the team can take the next step and what the makeup of next seasons squad will be in their new arena.
Are you watching “Fargo” on Fx? This season's accents and characters are as goofy as ever. Very entertaining.
Elections have consequences…too much yesterday to delve into…I would only ask you to research this administrations tax plan, the Republican health care plan and the executive order on our National Monuments…or better yet wait until Monday…no reason to ruin your weekend.
Songs of The Day…as I head to Green Lake tomorrow to see Richie Furay in concert. I love seeing these legends in small, intimate settings like the Thrasher Opera House…which is a really cool place to see a show. Furay is in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame twice as a founding member of both Buffalo Springfield and Poco.
Fallin In Love-Souther,Hillman & Furay Band- (1974) Record mogul David Geffen put them together trying to emulate the success of CSN or the Eagles. It didn't really work although they did produce two decent LP's Here is a rockin Furay track from the first Lp…always has been one of my favorite mid 70's tunes.
Crazy Eyes-Poco (1973) The Furay penned title track from an album dedicated to country-rock legend Gram Parsons who died just four days after this LP was released. The lack of commercial success led Furay to leave Poco and join up with Chris Hillman and JD Souther in the SHF band the next year.
