WAUASU, WI (WSAU) — Protesters were outside of Congressman Sean Duffy’s office is Wausau Thursday afternoon to try and urge him to not vote for the new Republican Healthcare Bill.
Joel Lewis, an Organizer for the North Central Organizing Co-Op, organized the protest and explains the reason behind it.
“295,400 members of (Duffy’s) district will be effected,” said Lewis. “Those are the amount of people that have preexisting conditions. And of those, 36,700 are children. So, we’re concerned that people will be discriminated against for preexisting conditions and it will actually be harder for working American’s to afford healthcare.”
Lewis admits there are flaws in the Affordable Care Act but doesn’t believe that this bill is the right replacement.
He said, “I think that the Affordable Care Act is not perfect and needs to be changed. I would not disagree with our congressman on that. I just don’t think that we need to make it more unaffordable and we need to increase access rather than limited access. That’s what I’m worried about, is that this is going to limit access to working-class people and it’s going to be more expensive.”
The House of Representatives would narrowly approve the repeal and replace healthcare bill by a 217-213 vote.
