GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Public Service’s (WPS) 21st annual Solar Olympics will be taking place Wednesday at the Kress Event Center on the UW-Green Bay campus.
Matt Cullen, a spokesman for WPS, explains just a few of the competitions that will be going on at the Solar Olympics.
“A solar race car, solar race car design, (and) solar cooker,” said Cullen. “And, it allows them to compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals in those individual competitions and we also award team awards for the first, second, and third place schools.”
Cullen says there is a requirement to participate in the Solar Olympics.
He said, “Well, the schools that the students come from have to be participants of our Solarwise for Schools program. Which is a program that was set up to provide students and schools with information about solar energy and it gives them, also, a renewable energy curriculum.”
The site for the Solar Olympics rotates between UW-Green Bay, UW-Stevens Point, and UW-Oshkosh. Cullen says they’re expecting over 200 students from 23 different schools to participate in this year’s event.
The schools participating in this year’s Solar Olympics are:
Ashwaubenon, Chilton, Crivitz, Denmark, Elcho, Gibraltar, Green Bay East, Green Bay Southwest, Green Bay West, Marathon, Marinette, Mishicot, Mosinee, Newman Catholic, Northlan Lutheran, Pulaski, Rhinelander, St. Thomas Aquinas, Stockbridge, Tomahawk, Valders, Wausau West, and West De Pere.
