Ten former Badgers will be inducted into the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall Of Fame on September 29th. The inductees include names that will be familiar and maybe some that aren't. Most Badger fans will remember the exploits of quarterbacks Darrell Bevell and Brooks Bollinger (Rose Bowl qbs both)…or mens hockey standouts Brian Elliot and Bob Suter (Olympic Gold Medal winners both). Also going in will be Tracy Webster and Tamara Moore from mens and womens basketball, Sara Bauer from womens hockey and Arlie Schardt from track & cross country. Former basketball & baseball coach Guy Lowman (1917-1932) gets in as does UW marching band director Mike Leckrone (lets face it what would Badger Athletics be without the band). Since the induction of Lowman hearkens back to the baseball hey-dey of the Badgers, can we please re-visit a possible return of varsity baseball to the list of Badger athletics. It continues to be an embarrassment that so many schools (including UW-Milwaukee) have a flourishing basball program and Wisconsin doesn't.
Even the incompetent James Dolan realizes that Phil Jackson's tenure with the Knicks had to end. It's been a disaster from start to finish .
Carole King's 2016 appearance at London's Hyde Park is coming to theaters. The concert film will debut on July 11th. King did her 'Tapestry” Lp in its entirety for the first time ever along with other songs. She was joined by Elton John, Graham Nash,David Crosby and James Taylor. The show will eventually be released on CD and DVD.
I like the concept of artists doing live shows of entire albums. Steely Dan has done it and others as well. Al Stewart is doing “Year of The Cat” on his tour this summer and fall including in Milwaukee.
Summerfest gets under way today and runs through July 9th at Milwaukee's lakefront.
From the 'its never over until its over” department…the Woodchucks took a nine run lead in the second inning last night and barely had a hit after that…meanwhile the Lakeshore Chinooks scored 17 unanswered runs for a 17-9 victory at Athletic Park…not pretty.
Elections have consequences….459,500 veterans would lose Medicaid coverage by 2026 under the US Senate Republicans plan to repeal and replace the ACA….Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has selected Daniel Jorjani to lead the Departments task force for cutting regulations..Who is Jorjani you ask? He's an advisor to the Koch Brothers…….Gotta love Shep Smith, the only sane guy at Fox News…He understands how journalism works…if a media company finds that a story they ran doesnt pass muster, they retract and people lose their jobs. Thats how CNN handled the brouhaha this week. Smith ripped Trump and his sqauwk macine mouthpieces like Hannity for their despiscable and dangerous attempt to co-opt the media from doing their fundamental job…shining light on the machinations of our government officials…and has been made abundently clear by the the garbage that Trump and his minions are trying to get away with every day…and the attempts to shield their bs from the voting public…there has rarely been a time in history when a strong and robust press is needed more. #resist
By the way…check out the Toronto Star…they have a section in which they track Trump's lies…and there are so many they have them broken down by category.
Happy Birthday to Mel Brooks who turns 91 today
Remind you have anyone??
Songs Of The Day
Obscured By Clouds-Pink Floyd (1972) the band had already begun recording “Dark Side Of The Moon” when they were asked to record the soundtrack for a French movie called La Vallee. This is some of that, released on this date in 1972.
Fame-David Bowie (1975) John Lennon joins Bowie for this big hit….it was all over the radio the summer before college…released on this date in 1975. Recorded as a single while Bowie was in the midst of management issues following the “Young Americans” sessions, the tune was his first #1 record in America.
