I want to note the passing of long time baseball umpire and
wrestling official Arvo Britten who died Friday at the age of 81. I probably
coached more baseball games with Arvo as one of the men in blue than any other
umpire. He always kept command of the game and I usually didn’t bother to
question any rules decisions cuz I think he had the rule book memorized. There was many a game where we would tell him about some weird baseball situation we and encountered in another game and he would almost immediatly know what the proper call should have been. That's what made the alzheimers so cruel. He
also spent a long time as probably the top wrestling official in the area as
well working many State Tournaments. He was captain of the Wausau High
basketball team in 1955 and was a three sport athlete at UWSP. He worked in the
Merrill school district for many years and coached the Merrill Wrestling team
to a 207-17-0 record. He has been inducted into the George Martin Wrestling
Hall Of Fame, and was given the National Wrestling Hall Of Fame Award for
Lifetime Achievement. He was a good guy and I enjoyed my time around him. His
Memorial Service is this Friday at 5:30 at Brainard Funeral home in Wausau.
Visitation starts at 3pm.
Elections have consequences….while you may have been
distracted by the Alabama Senate race there were lots of other things
happening. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to approve a 36 year old lawyer
to a lifetime federal judgeship. Brett Talley is the fourth judicial nominee of
Donald Trump to receive a “not qualified” ranking from the American Bar
Association and the 2
nd
to receive it unanimously. This guy has
never tried a case. In 2013 he wrote on his blog that armed revolution was an
important defense against a tyrannical government and also pledged his “ total financial,
political & intellectual support’ to the NRA after the Newtown Conn
shootings. This is Donald Trump’s mission to re-shape the federal bench with
young right wing idealogues who will be in place for decades……….Donald Trump,
while on foreign soil, managed to not only praise the leader of our most persistent
enemy but did it while also trashing our own intelligence agencies. Imagine the
right’s response if Barack Obama did something like this. Oh, that’s right, a
simple bow to the King of Saudi Arabia brought down the right’s wrath as a
sell-out. But they are silent as the Commander-In-Chief calls a former 3-star general a “political hack” on
Veterans Day. Every intelligence agency in this country knows that the Russians
interfered in our election to help Trump win. And yet Trump prefers to believe
and prostrate himself again to the Russian dictator. His actions and comments
certainly don’t jibe with the oath of office he took.……he continues his childish
tweeting about Kim Jong-Un. His chief of staff, John Kelly, says he doesn’t pay
attention to Trumps tweets. This seems like an egregious mistake considering
the rest of the world does and Trump views it as the way to rally his
supporters. This president is compromised and it only remains to be seen if the
Republican controlled Congress has the cojones to do what must be done. Considering
the fact that they view a child predator as a better choice than a Democrat in
a Senate election what would you think the answer would be?
Quotes Of The Day (lots of them today)
“How in the world did the strong on Russia, pro-family
Republican Party become the pro-Putin, pro-men dating teenage girls party”-Stuart
Stevens”
“I have seen the classified information on Russian hacking.
Donald Trump has received classified briefings. I can tell you that Trump is
LYING. He knows the Kremlin hacked America last year”- Congressman Ted Lieu
“There’s nothing ‘America First’ about taking the word of a
KGB colonel over that of the American intelligence community’-Senator John
McCain
“It was common knowledge that Roy Moore dated high school
girls, everyone we knew thought it was weird. We wondered why someone his age
would hang out at high school football games and the mall.”-Former Deputy DA
Theresa Jones (who worked with Moore)
“Imagine 1962: Kennedy tells the nation, “Khrushchev says
there are no missiles in Cuba and really means it. What can I do”- Ronald Klain
“Imagine what the GOP response would be to a clip of Harvey
Weinstein of Kevin Spacey getting a standing ovation from Hollywood liberals
after their victims spoke up. It would be on continuous loop on FoxNews”- Steve
Silbermann (responding to Republicans cheering Roy Moore at an appearance)
“The Russians do not harbor good intentions toward the
United States and there shouldn’t be any illusions or ambiguity about that. Our
President fosters that ambiguity”-former Director of National Intelligence
James Clapper
“They told me if I didn’t vote for Trump, we’d have someone
in the White House who’d create a moral climate that would have one whole side
of the political spectrum rationalizing bad behavior and defining deviancy down”-
Bill Kristol
“Any president could come out and say that every branch of
military intelligence are liars, but only one has the perfect mix of
narcissism, amphetamines and dementia to do it on Veterans Day”-John Fugelsang
“We have grown too afraid of the consequences of removing an
unfit president from office and too complacent about the consequences of
leaving an unfit president in office-Ezra Klein
“The President is tweeting like a mean girl at a rogue
nuclear state while we argue whether a guy in Alabama who dated teens as a grown
man should be a US Senator. We had a good run America”-Tom Nichols
And then there is this one which should tell you everything
you need to know about Trump supporters at this point….
“I’d be fine with a child predator in the Senate so long as
it would keep the Democrats from stealing the seat. Child molesters are evil,
Democrats are worse”-Eric Dondero
The Badger defense is spectacular. And linebacker Leon
Jacobs set a record on Saturday with his 55
th
game played in his
career. He also had a fumble return for a touchdown.
How much stock do you put in the Packers victory on Sunday?
The Bears have a terrible offense. I see four more possible wins this season
but 9 wins is not going to get the Packers into the playoffs. Gotta try though….no
tanking despite what some fans want.
The Bucks have won two in a row and will host Memphis
tonight. Getting Bledsoe allows the Bucks to bring Brogdon off the bench which
gives that second unit scoring and energy. Good move.
