Merry Christmas To You

The Friday before Christmas seems like a good time to pause in our national gnashing of teeth and just wish all of my friends a very Merry Christmas. I appreciate you listening whether its on the air or online to the various stations I pontificate on everyday. I also appreciate you checking out this space once in awhile. I know some of us will never agree on politics and the direction the country is going but there are certain things we should be able to find common ground on…(like, maybe,NFL officiating sucks). This is also the time I jump down the rabbit hole with some of my favorite holiday tunes. Hope you enjoy them…..

Vince Guaraldi wasnt the first choice to provide the music for the animtaed Peanuts special but can you think of 1965's “A Charlie Brown Christmas” today without tapping your toes to this?

Charles Schulz was adamant that Linus reading from the book of Luke be part of the special. The network suits were already wary of the specials anti-commercialism message, didn't like the actors voices and didn't want the scripture reading. Schulz said it stays in or no deal….the suits agreed but CBS put the show on expecting it to flop…..it did huge ratings and was easily #1 for the night.

This song appreciates a big voice….and nobodys voice was bigger when she cut this than Whitney Houston….

While technically not a “Christmas” song, Joan showed on this cut from her classic “Blue” lp that not everybodys Christmas was joyful

A perfect pairing of musical prodigys. I don't know who first suggested that Ma and Krauss combine their skills on the traditonal Irish carol…but they were a genius.

Appeared on their 1976 Lp Islands as sort of a throwaway tune to fill out the record…its' grown on me over the years

While I was listening to Zeppelin, Santana, Steppenwolf & CSNY…I was always a closet Carpenters fan. Bought the records etc. That voice…few like it in music history….

And the one I always come back to…Wausau's own John McCutcheon and his classic telling of the iconic World War 1 Christmas truce between the British and German troops …
