MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU-WAOW) The Key Apartments in Marshfield will be treated for a bed bug infestation. The spraying will take place on Tuesday, August 28.
Property managers are asking residents to wash and/or dry clean all of their clothes, put all of their belongings in black trash bags and move their furniture two feet away from the walls. If they don’t comply, they could face eviction, according to a notice given to tenants.
Several residents said they have disabilities, and those tasks are daunting to them. They also said management won’t help them or hear their concerns. “I’m on a fixed income,” said tenant Leslie Adams. “I can’t afford to send all my clothes to the dry cleaners and pay rent. I can’t afford to replace the sofa and pay rent. But it seems like they could care less.”
The property managers told WAOW-TV off camera “everything is being taken care of,” and they don’t think what they’re asking of the tenants is a “big deal.”
The Wood County Health Department says they’ve received 16 major complaints about bed bugs. “If they smell us, they’re going to hitchhike, hitch a ride, and feed on us at night,” said Kate Carlson, the department’s environmental health specialist. “They can lay up to two-to-five eggs a day.”
And getting rid of them can cost from $800-1,000 for a couple of treatments, and it often takes several treatments to fully exterminate the bed bugs.
