WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The ice fishing season has started for some area anglers, who were spotted drilling holes in Lake Wausau on Sunday.
WAOW TV talked experienced ice fisherman Matt Nelles Sunday, who said the early-season conditions are his favorite. “It’s nice and warm yet, it’s not super cold, you don’t have to worry about a shack. The ice is in good shape.”
He says an early start is always better than waiting. Ice on Lake Wausau was as much as six inches deep in some areas, that’s OK to walk on but not nearly thick enough to drive on.
Nelles says it’s always better to take precautions, adding no ice is safe ice.
