MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — It took overtime but Marquette was able to oust Wisconsin 74-69 for the second consecutive year in a matchup of two of the state’s premier men’s basketball programs.
Markus Howard scored 27 points to lead the Golden Eagles in the contest while SPASH graduates Same and Joey Hauser combined for 28 points including the first four points of the extra frame after Brad Davison was called for a flagrant foul.
Ethan Happ dropped 34 points in the losing effort, playing a whopping 41 minutes in the contest. He also added 11 rebounds.
After Happ, the scoring dropped off significantly to 11 points from Nate Reuvers. D’Mitrik Trice added 10.
The Badgers were ranked 12th in the latest AP Top 25 poll, giving Marquette their second consecutive win over the #12 team in the country after last week’s triumph over Kansas State.
The game went to overtime tied at 61, Marquette went on to win the extra session 13-8. Over 17,500 fans took in the rivalry game at Fiserv Forum, the new downtown home of the Marquette men’s basketball program.
