GREEN BAY, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) — The Packers can scratch one name off their list of possible new coaches. Northwestern University head football coach Pat Fitzgerald said Thursday that he is staying at the Chicago-area school.
Fitzgerald was on the short list for NFL teams with open coaching spots, but he decided to stay in the NCAA. Current Green Bay President CEO Mark Murphy is a former athletic director at Northwestern, and hired Fitzgerald to his current position.
After Northwestern’s 31-20 win over Utah in the Holiday Bowl, Fitzgerald said in a post game interview, “I’m a Wildcat for life.”
The Packers are looking to interview seven or eight other coaches to replace Mike McCarthy.
