STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) A 19-year-old Plover man was sentenced to five years in prison after stabbing his mother and shooting two friends. He was also ordered to serve 10 years on extended supervision after his release.
Alec Varney was sentenced in Portage County court on Friday. In November he entered a ‘no contest’ plea to three charges in Portage County court. Seven other counts were dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Investigators say the April 2018 attack happened after a night of drinking and smoking pot at his family home. His friends say Varney started hallucinating and believed that they were plotting to harm him. He fired shots at his friends – wounding two of them – and then stabbed his mother when she went to check in the noise she’d heard.
Varney fled from the home and was arrested after a 10-hour manhunt.
He’d been jailed on a $100,000 bond since.
