WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — The 2019 Badger State Games are underway in the Wausau Area.
Opening ceremonies for the amaeture sports competition were held this weekend with competitions starting in youth hockey and eSports (competitive video gaming).
The Badger State Winter Games bring over 12,000 visitors and competitors to Wausau annually over a four-month period between January and April. Competitions in everything from snowshoeing to pistol shooting and alpine skiing will be held between now and then.
“They’re staying in the hotels. They’re going to the restaurants. They’re going shopping,” BSG Event Director Nick Ockwig told WAOW TV. “It really introduces our community, the greater Wausau area and central Wisconsin, to new people.”
