MADISON, WI (WSAU) — TDS Telecom and the City of Stevens Point have announced an agreement to bring high-speed internet, voice, and video service to the city.
Plans call for a $12-15 million dollar investment in fiber optics infrastructure that would allow the company to begin serving residential and business customers by the fall of 2019.
That means more bandwidth and options for customers, according to DeAnne Boegli, the national Public Relations Manager for TDS. “It gives consumers another choice of providers for high-speed internet. Up to one gig service [provides a great platform] for people to telework, work from home, do schoolwork online. That much power with high-speed internet can really make things happen for families and individuals.”
The proposal passed the city’s finance committee meeting on Tuesday and is expected to get final approval at the January 21st city council meeting.
Boegli says TDS has already set up a website allowing potential customers to express their interest in the services and browse available packages. Services should be switched on in the fall, depending on the weather.
The Madison-based company has set their sites on expansion in Central Wisconsin this summer. Representatives of the company recently made a pitch for expansion into the Village of Weston, and have had similar discussions with officials in Kronenwetter as well.
“Those discussions are going really well, so we are looking forward to having signed agreements with them in the near future,” said Boegli.
She added that TDS has been fielding phone calls from other Central Wisconsin communities as well.
TDS already offers services in Mosinee, Junction City, and Vesper.
