WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The family of an illegal immigrant who was deported from Wisconsin Rapids to West Africa says they will all leave the country to be reunited.
USA Today-Wisconsin reports that Katrina Jabbi, her two daughters, and newborn son will relocate to The Gambia to be with her husband.
Buba Jabbi came to the United States on a temporary visa to attend the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He never returned home. He was the subject of a deportation order in 2010, but because of problems with travel documents from Gambia he remained in the US. Jabbi was required to check-in with immigation officials annually. He’d complied with those orders until he was detained in February 2018.
His wife, Katrina, was pregnant at the time. Buba will see his 5-month old son for the first time when his family departs for Gambia on Wednesday.
The family hopes to return to the US under a hardship waiver, but the process is expensive and could take up to three years.
