MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Governor Tony Evers Chief Legal Counsel hitting back at sheriff’s who refuse to enforce the mask mandate.
Chief Legal Counsel Ryan Nilsestuen says most people will follow the rules regardless of whether or not sheriffs choose to enforce them.
“While there are some Sheriff’s or other people who like to make a lot of noise about either enforcing or not enforcing it, the fact is I think most people get it,” Nilsestuen said Tuesday.
He says if the sheriff’s deputies won’t enforce it, there are plenty of others who can.
“That could be local law enforcement, that could also be public health officials,” said Nilsestuen. “It could be other people who make those referrals.”
Nilsestuen says they’ve discussed the enforcement of the rule with local district attorneys.
A number of sheriffs departments, including those in Brown, Outagamie, and Shawano Counties have told residents they won’t be actively enforcing the mask ordinance and have asked residents not to call with mask complaints.
Governor Evers statewide mask mandate went into force on Saturday.
