APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Wisconsin State Fair may be canceled, but its famous cream puffs are not.
Tess Kerksen, Wisconsin State Fair Public Relations Manager says, “We decided to take traveling cream puffs presented by festival on the road to give them that iconic Wisconsin State Fair dessert.”
The cream puff drive-thru brought a long line of fair food lovers to Appleton.
“It’s a specialty you know.. it’s a specific thing that is known for Wisconsin,” said one New London man.
Thousands of treats rolled off a truck, and into people’s hands.
The treat might be small, but it’s full of nostalgia for Laura Martin.
“I have gone to the state fair just about every year so I had to get my cream puffs.”
She shares with FOX 11 the right way to eat a cream puff…
“I love the nice bit of crunch from the pastry and then you get that good Wisconsin cream in the middle, it’s perfect.”
Many came to share the joy,
“I’m sharing with the little guys that live across the street from me, we’re having one for lunch,” said one Appleton woman.
Another couple says, “we’ll share it with our daughter and granddaughter.”
Kerksen tells FOX 11 the tradition, had to go on.
“Cream puffs are so important to the community and everyone that comes to the Wisconsin State fair, they are the iconic Wisconsin dessert, and absolutely everyone needs one every year because it is a tradition.”
The fair suggests the best way to enjoy a cream puff is to not eat it like a sandwich but to take it apart and eat it one side at a time.
The state fair says Appleton bought more than 10,000 cream puffs Tuesday.
The traveling desserts will make their last stop in Madison today.
