MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU-WDLB) — Voters in the Marshfield School District will decide on a $3.5 million referendum for operational costs this November.
WDLB Radio in Marshfield reports that district leaders approved the question during an operations meeting Wednesday night. Board members said the question will actually replace a previous $3 million referendum that’s set to expire in the coming year.
“We are not asking for more money in a sense,” said Board Member Kajal Sitwala during the meeting. “People who pay property taxes in the Marshfield area [wouldn’t see this] until December 2021.”
She also noted that a no vote on the referendum would not equal a lower tax bill for 2020.
The money would be used for operational expenses. Board Member Sam Steiner says it’s not for frills or to build the district’s rainy day fund.
“The state gave us the short end of the stick in terms of what [they] provide us. It’s just the state of the situation, we have to make up for that in order to keep a high quality of education in this district. This is to keep what we have available.
“This is to keep us going,” she added.
Sitwala also noted that the impact on the typical tax bill would be minimum if the measure is approved, which is especially important when times are tight for many residents due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in Central Wisconsin.
The Wausau School District is also asking residents to approve a referendum on their ballot this November.
