MADISON, WI (WSAU) Staff at the Wisconsin Elections Commission recommends that Kanye West not be on the Wisconsin presidential ballot.
The memo from staff is only a recommendation. The state Elections Commission, made up of three Democrats and three Republicans, is likely to vote on Thursday. It’s unclear what would happen if the vote is a tie.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the memo says: “the nomination papers submitted by Mr. West and Ms. Tidball were not filed timely in accordance with state law.” West’s lawyers say state law says nomination papers shall not be filed after 5pm. They contend the forms were filed exactly at 5 o’clock and were on-time. Others say the paperwork was late.
There are also questions surrounding other parts of nominating forms. 2,000 valid signatures are required. Some of the signatures are thought to be invalid.
Many Democrats contend that West is running to syphon votes from Joe Biden to boost Donald Trump’s chances of winning in several battleground states.
West has qualified to be on the ballot in Utah, Colorado, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. His nominating forms are under review in seven other states. West’s petitions were turned down because of invalid signatures in Illinois, and his paperwork was withdrawn in New Jersey.
