MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Protests over a police shooting in Kenosha spread to Madison, with more violence and looting reported.
Madison police say a crowd of nearly 500 people gathered at Capitol Square around 9pm Monday night. The rally began peacefully, with demonstrators marching in the downtown are.
A police report said the group re-assembled and was joined by violent protesters later in the evening. Several dumpsters were set on fire. Police say that rocks and bottles were thrown at first responders who tried to put the fires out.
Windows were smashed along State Street, and at least three businesses were looted. Police used chemical irritants to disperse the crowd.
Police are reporting six arrests. One of those in custody was armed with a handgun. Police say they are working to identify other people involved in criminal activity, and additional arrests are likely.
