Since the end of July, six more horses tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in the northwestern part of the state. EEE is a virus that can be spread to humans, horses, and other animals through infected mosquitoes. That’s why the Wisconsin Department of Health Services is warning people to be careful and protect themselves from getting bit. Most people that get bit by an infected mosquito don’t show any signs of EEE. People that show signs of the virus start off by getting a fever, a headache, or start getting chills, and end up with brain swelling.
The good news is that from 1964 to 2019, there were only three human cases of EEE reported in Wisconsin and no cases yet this year. Just be mindful of the virus, how it’s spread, and how to prevent yourself from getting it.
