UNDATED (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) – Senator Tammy Baldwin is calling on Verso Corporation to keep Wisconsin Rapids in mind in any future sale of a now-shuttered paper mill.
The paper mill in Wisconsin Rapids has been there for over 100 years, and Baldwin says it has maintained jobs and families for generations. More than 900 jobs were lost. “That’s what I’m asking the company’s leadership to do today so that we can keep our Made in Wisconsin economy moving forward,” Baldwin said.
“Verso Corporation should do right by the Wisconsin Rapids workers and small businesses that depend on the mill’s success by selecting new owners that are committed to North Central Wisconsin’s future.”
It is unclear if any sales are in the works at this time. A lumber cooperative based in northern Wisconsin had expressed some interest, but a formal proposal hasn’t been submitted.
The mill has changed hands several times after being sold off by the Mead family in 2000.
