I was trolling around YouTube yesterday and came across this performance by Bruce Springsteen. It’s a scorching live version of the title track from his 1995 LP featuring the out -of-this-world guitar work from Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine. It’s from a 2008 tour. Now you know the Boss is one of my faves and this is one of the reasons why. That he can take a quiet folk song and turn it into a full blown rocker is one thing. But as a long time champion of the disenfranchised folks of the world…it’s the song-writing that, to me, is mind blowing. In 1995 he writes a song based on a 1939 novel (Grapes of Wrath) and using a Woody Guthrie song as inspiration, Springsteen updates the themes and situations to what was happening in his time. And there are still people like Tom Joad out there today. This song is just as incisive and meaningful today as the day it was written…hell, as the day the first “Tom Joad” headed out of the Dust Bowl.
Here is the original if you want to compare the two…
Paul McCartney is coming out with a new album on which he plays all the instruments. “McCartney III” is a sequel to his self-made 1970 album “McCartney,” and the 1980 follow-up “McCartney II.” The former Beatle says “McCartney III” was a result of working on film music during the quarantine and having time to work on unfinished songs. McCartney said he completed each piece of music just for the fun of it, and had no idea it would end up being an album. McCartney III comes out December 11th, and is available for pre-order now.
A new Jerry Garcia album is coming out. “Garcia Live Volume 15” is a previously unreleased live set featuring the late Grateful Dead singer with keyboardist Merl Saunders and saxophonist Martin Fierro, recorded in 1971. The jazzy set includes a 12-minute version of the David Crosby track, “The Wall Song,” which can be heard now. “Garcia Live Volume 15” comes out December 4th.
Happy Birthday to Mountain guitarist Leslie West who turns 75 today. This is an underated song from an underrated early 70’s band.

We didn’t really know how close until years later…Research the name of Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov…the man who saved the world…and that’s not hyperbole.
