The Wisconsin Farm Bureau wants to make sure deer hunters are aware of the trespassing laws in the state before heading out to the woods Saturday morning. The laws are pretty simple, but there might be one that you didn’t know about.
Wisconsin Farm Bureau’s Director of Governmental Relations reminds us that if anyone’s having issues with trespassers, don’t call the DNR. The first thing you should do is call the county sheriff’s department because the DNR isn’t authorized to handle trespassing cases.
Wisconsin Laws:
- If you wish to hunt on someone else’s property, you need to have written or verbal permission.
- If you have private property that’s enrolled as ‘open’ in the Managed Forest Law program, then people are allowed to go on your land.
- People are also allowed on your private property if it’s considered ‘inholdings,’ unless you have a PRIVATE PROPERTY sign or something along those lines posted. (Inholdings means that the private property is surrounded by public land.)
- Lastly, if you shoot a deer and it ends up on someone else’s property, you still need permission to retrieve the animal.
Good luck out there this weekend!
