MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Governor Tony Evers says the first batch of 49,725 Pfizer-developed COVID-19 vaccines will be sent directly to distribution hubs this week, which will trigger the state’s vaccine program.
“Since the early days in the pandemic, we have been planning and preparing for the arrival of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine,” said Gov. Evers. “I fully trust in the expertise of our scientists, researchers, and public health experts who are guiding our planning, preparation, and distribution. They have put a lot of effort into ensuring that the vaccine infrastructure and clinics are ready for the successful rollout of our Wisconsin COVID-19 Vaccine Program.”
The state’s front-line healthcare workers and long-term care residents will be first in line to receive the vaccine, which must be given in two shots roughly four weeks apart.
As the state receives more shipments of vaccines the focus will turn to those in other groups.
Another vaccine from Moderna will be considered for approval on Thursday and could be given the go-ahead by Friday.
