MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin is taking another step in the COVID-19 vaccination process.
Gov. Tony Evers’ office announced Monday the first on-site vaccinations are beginning at skilled nursing homes.
The governor’s office also announced the launching of a program that pairs eligible long-term care facilities with pharmacies to provide free, on-site vaccinations for residents and staff.
“This partnership will help reduce the strain on our long-term care facilities and help deliver the vaccine to those in higher-risk populations,” Gov. Evers said in a news release. “Protecting our most vulnerable Wisconsinites is a top priority and will be a critical step for the success of Wisconsin’s COVID-19 Vaccine Program.”
The “Pharmacy Partnership Program for Long-Term Care” pairs facilities with the pharmacies of Walgreens or CVS. The pharmacies will manage the vaccine for facilities, including storage, handling, scheduling and administration, according to the release.
the state Department of Health Services chose Moderna’s vaccine for the program, with 56,800 doses allocated.
DHS expects the program to continue for about two months. Following that period, facilities can either continue working with their pharmacy partner or choose another partner.
