EAGLE RIVER, WI (WSAU) — USA Hockey will not hold its 2021 Pond Hockey National Championships in Eagle River.
Officials with USA Hockey said the decision was made following discussions with the Vilas County Health Department, Eagle River Chamber of Commerce, and tournament sponsor Labatt Blue.
“The health and safety of the players, volunteers, and the Eagle River community is of utmost importance during these unprecedented times,” said Ashley Bevan, USA Hockey’s senior director of adult hockey. “Reaching this decision with our partners was extremely difficult, but we jointly believe it’s the right thing to do and we look forward to the 2022 USA Hockey/Labatt Blue Pond Hockey National Championships.”
The tournament was scheduled for February 4-7, a longer-than-normal window to allow social distancing among participants.
Teams that had registered for the 2021 event will get a refund of their entry fee. As of now, plans are to bring the tournament back in Mid-February 2022.
