The Portland Timbers announced Thursday that they agreed to a multi-year contract extension with midfielder Eryk Williamson.
Williamson, 23, was a surprise contributor last season when he recorded three goals and five assists in 21 matches (17 starts).
Entering the season, the native of Alexandria, Va., was scoreless in seven career appearances.
“Signing Eryk has been a key objective of the club for the past 12 months and we are delighted that Eryk’s belief in the club mirrors our belief in him,” Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said in a news release. “Eryk is a unique talent and we are looking forward to seeing his continued growth and performance as a Timbers player.”
Portland coach Giovanni Savarese was impressed with Williamson’s emergence and feels more improvement lies ahead.
“Eryk is an extremely talented and creative player with many great attributes on and off the field,” Savarese said. “I very much believe in the development of American players and am incredibly excited to see him continue his career in Portland.”
