The 2021 sturgeon spearing season came to an end yesterday with a total of 1,831 fish harvested. This year’s Lake Winnebago harvest was the highest it’s been since the 2015 season. The Wisconsin DNR says we came very close to hitting the 90% mark on harvest totals, but were still able to have the full 16 days to fish.
This past weekend was a little slower for fishing as Lake Winnebago had 50 sturgeon harvested. The DNR says numbers were lower this weekend because a significant amount of people already took their shacks off of the lake. The Blackwolf Landing registration station was the busiest, with 13 fish registered. Stockbridge Harbor led all registration stations with 303 fish.
The largest sturgeon harvested on closing day was by Kevin Ward, he managed to spear a 135.8 pound fish. During the full season there were 77 fish registered that weighed over 100 pounds.
