MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin ended the work week with an uptick in coronavirus cases, while vaccinations reached one in five people 16 and older.
The state Department of Health Services reported 550 new confirmed cases, or 16.4% of the 3,355 total tests done. Friday’s total pushed the rolling seven-day average to 392 cases per day, a jump of 29 cases per day from Thursday’s number.
The trend of deaths was more encouraging, however. The state reported one death on Friday, dropping the seven-day average to seven deaths per day, a level last seen on Sept. 29.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 568,902 confirmed cases and 6,525 deaths. The state reported a total of 31 cases of the virus variant first documented in the U.K., five more than at its last update.
DHS considered 555,849 people to have recovered from COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.
As of Friday, 1,895,402 doses of vaccine had been administered in Wisconsin. DHS said 20.4% of the state’s population — nearly 1.2 million people — had received at least one shot, while 11.5% — nearly 670,000 people — had completed their vaccination series. Among people 65 and older, 66.2% had received at least one dose and 36.7% had been fully vaccinated.
Overall hospitalization numbers were expected to be updated later in the afternoon.
