EAU CLAIRE, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin State Treasurer is setting her sights on a higher office.
On Wednesday Sarah Godlewski formally announced she is entering the race for US Senate in 2022 for the seat currently being held by Republican Ron Johnson.
In a statement to supporters and potential donors, Godlewski said “Wisconsinites deserve a senator who’s laser-focused on getting things done on the kitchen table issues facing working families.”
She also took a stab at Johnson saying he “has completely lost touch with Wisconsin and reality, spreading conspiracy theories, denying climate change, and obstructing economic relief. It’s time to take a different path in Washington. As a mom, a former small business owner, and Wisconsin’s fiscal watchdog, I’m not going to let anything get in the way of Wisconsin’s success.”
She becomes the fourth Democrat to declare for the race after Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson, Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President Alex Lasry, and Marshfield radiologist Gillian Battino all threw their names into the hat earlier this year.
Johnson has not given any indication that he will seek a third term in Washington, though did receive an endorsement from former President Donald Trump last week who encouraged him to run by saying he has “the kind of courage we need in the U.S. Senate. He has no idea how popular he is. Run, Ron, Run!”
Trump, who is still banned from most major social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook, made his comment through a release by the Save America Political Action Committee (PAC).
