GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is lamenting that legal marijuana won’t happen in the state for now.
On a day known in large part for the consumption of marijuana, April 20th, Governor Evers, a Democrat, said he’s disappointed that assembly Republicans rejected his plan to put marijuana legalization into the state budget plan.
“Any kind of polling we’ve done in the state of Wisconsin, either at the county level or municipal level, shows the people of Wisconsin want to see that happen,” Evers said at an appearance in Green Bay. “At minimum they would like to see it legalized for medicinal purposes.”
Evers says the fact that neighboring states DO have legal marijuana means Wisconsin is leaving money on the table.
“I had a chance over the weekend to speak to Illinois Governor [JB] Pritzker,” Evers said. “He was pleased with the Republican leader’s decision because of the money from Wisconsinites that goes to the state of Illinois.”
Illinois and Michigan both have legalized recreational Marijuana. Evers said many Wisconsinites drive across the border to purchase marijuana in other states.
