WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Good News Project in Wausau used Earth Day 2021 to announce their continued Capital Campaign efforts.
Good News Project E-cycling Program Manager David Daniels says they are ramping up efforts to help pay for an expansion of their facility, which will help them serve even more people with low-cost leases on home medical equipment.
“Right now we are serving about 2,000 families per year. Once we get all the renovations complete, we can move up to 4,000 families per year,” said Daniels.
Those families can lease equipment such as medical beds, crutches, canes, walkers, toilet seat raisers, and other items. “Instead of buying [those items] outright, we allow people to rend them out for a six-month lease,” he said.
Leasing out that equipment not only saves the family money by not having to purchase those things outright, it can also keep those items out of the landfill when they are no longer needed.
Daniels says they can essentially recycle “anything with a power cord and circuit board,” keeping those items out of local landfills and protecting the environment in the process.
“Your average computer has about 20 different metals, half of which are hazardous to our health. So when those go to a landfill there’s a high likelihood that stuff is going to end up in the water supply,” he said.
Electronics recycling through the Good News Project does come with a small cost of $0.45 per pound. That means a typical flat-screen TV can be taken for around $5. Daniels adds that you can get an idea of what the recycling costs for your items are by weighing them on a typical bathroom scale.
Items that are taken free of charge include smartphones, laptops, and older cell phones that only offer call and text message features.
