MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Can we achieve herd immunity for COVID-19 by July 4th?
Wisconsin’s Deputy Health Services Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk says “yes,” as long as people keep stepped forward to get vaccinated.
“We really encourage people to think about not only vaccine for you, but vaccine to protect others around you,” said Willems Van Dijk. “If people keep raising their hand and saying yes, we absolutely can get to that level by July.”
She says they’re making as much effort as they can to give people info on the vaccines.
“Many people are thinking very thoughtfully about this decision,” Willems Van Dijk said. “We are here, and I know your health care provider is here, your friends and family who have received the vaccine are here, for those of you who have not received the vaccines to get more information.”
As of Thursday, just over 41 percent of Wisconsin’s total population had gotten at least one shot, and 29-point-7 percent is fully vaccinated.
Willems Van Dijk said about one-and-a-half million more people need to be fully vaccinated to reach 80 percent of the total population, the target for herd immunity.
