Gerrit Cole struck out 11 in seven dominating innings while Aaron Hicks and Rougned Odor hit fifth-inning homers off Shane Bieber, lifting the visiting New York Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians Saturday night.
Cole (3-1) allowed a run on three hits to post his third double-digit strikeout game this season and 41st regular season game with at least 10 strikeouts. The performance gave Cole 50 strikeouts through his first five games to break the team record of 46 set by Bob Turley in 1955 and matched by Masahiro Tanaka in 2014.
After allowing an RBI single to Eddie Rosario, Cole ended his outing by retiring the final 11 hitters to complete an impressive 111-pitch performance as the Yankees won their season-high third straight game.
Bieber (2-2) took a tough loss, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings. He struck out nine and issued three walks as his streak of double-digit strikeout games ended at six. Bieber ended the night with 57 strikeouts through his first five starts, the second-most all-time behind Nolan Ryan, who totaled 59 in his first five starts in 1978).
Athletics 7, Orioles 2
Jed Lowrie hit a three-run homer and visiting Oakland extended its winning streak to 13 games with a victory over Baltimore.
The A’s lost their first six games but just one since. This is Oakland’s longest winning streak since it took 20 straight in 2002. Mark Canha and Matt Olson each drove in two runs. Canha scored three runs while Elvis Andrus contributed two.
Baltimore starter Wade LeBlanc (0-1) gave up four runs and six hits in just 1 2/3 innings as Oakland never trailed. Chris Bassitt (2-2) earned the win for Oakland, going six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out eight.
Astros 16, Angels 2
Michael Brantley roped three doubles and scored four times, Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman clubbed home runs and Kent Emanuel excelled in his major league debut as host Houston rolled over Los Angeles.
The Astros clinched the four-game series with their third straight win, their first series victory after four consecutive series defeats. Houston jumped on Angels right-hander Griffin Canning (1-2) in the first inning and did not relent against the bullpen.
Astros starter Jake Odorizzi tossed just five pitches and recorded only one out before departing with right forearm tightness. Emanuel allowed home runs to Albert Pujols in the second inning and Shohei Ohtani in the third. He allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.
Mariners 8, Red Sox 2
Kyle Seager collected three hits and three RBIs and Chris Flexen pitched a career-high seven innings to fuel Seattle to a win over host Boston.
Sam Haggerty homered in the eighth inning for the Mariners, who improved to 7-3 on the road.
Flexen (2-1) allowed one run on four hits and struck out a career-high seven batters.
Nationals 7, Mets 1
Joe Ross pitched six sharp innings of one-run ball as visiting Washington scored in each of the first five innings and beat New York.
Ross (2-1) held the Mets to five hits, struck out four and issued one walk in an efficient 91-pitch showing. Every starter reached base at least once on a day Washington did not produce an extra-base hit.
Marcus Stroman (3-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings and saw his ERA rise from 0.89 to 2.22. The right-hander also saw a personal six-game winning streak halted and took his first defeat since Sept. 7, 2019, against Philadelphia.
Royals 2, Tigers 1
Brady Singer tossed seven strong innings to outduel Matthew Boyd, lifting visiting Kansas City to a win over slumping Detroit.
Singer (1-2) allowed one run on three hits and equaled his career high with eight strikeouts. Singer didn’t walk a batter in his 93-pitch gem as the Royals captured the second contest of a four-game series.
Scott Barlow retired the side in order in the eighth inning and Josh Staumont recorded his first save after striking out two batters in the ninth.
Pirates 6, Twins 2
Trevor Cahill allowed one run on two hits over six innings and Michael Perez and Kevin Newman each homered as Pittsburgh cruised past Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Perez, who entered the game 0-for-15 on the road, went 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs. It was the third three-hit game of his career.
Cahill (1-2) entered the contest with a 9.69 ERA and had allowed seven runs in two of his three previous starts. Michael Pineda (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings while striking out five.
Cardinals 2, Reds 0
John Gant threw six scoreless innings as St. Louis defeated visiting Cincinnati as the Cardinals scored the only run they would need in the first inning.
Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson led off with singles. After Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a forceout, Nolan Arenado lined an RBI single into right field to put the Cardinals up 1-0.
Gant (1-2) struck out five batters and allowed just three hits and two walks as the Cardinals handed the Reds their sixth consecutive loss. Reds starting pitcher Wade Miley (2-2) pitched well in defeat, allowing the two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings.
Brewers 4, Cubs 3
Manny Pina hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run, and Milwaukee held on for a win over host Chicago.
After watching the game from the dugout for two-plus hours, Pina stepped to the plate in the seventh inning to deliver the blast, which was his second of the season. Milwaukee earned its fourth victory in the past five games and evened the series against Chicago at one win apiece.
Nico Hoerner had a two-run double for the Cubs, and Jason Heyward clubbed a solo home run. Chicago’s four-game winning streak came to an end.
Rays 5, Blue Jays 3
Despite falling behind early, Tampa Bay rallied for a hard-fought win over Toronto, evening their three-game series with their AL East rival.
Ryan Thompson (2-1) got the win for the Rays, striking out two and giving up two hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
For the Blue Jays, reliever Jordan Romano (1-1) took the loss after getting just one out and giving up two runs (one earned) in the eighth inning.
White Sox 2, Rangers 1
Luis Robert scored from second base on Nick Madrigal’s walk-off double with two outs in the ninth and Chicago edged visiting Texas.
Texas had pulled even in the top of the ninth on Willie Calhoun’s one-out homer to right field off White Sox closer Liam Hendriks (1-0), who picked up the win despite his second blown save.
Chicago’s Dallas Keuchel scattered seven hits over six scoreless innings for the White Sox, who have won five of their last six games.
