The Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) kicks off its new “Organic Farm Starts Series” in May. The OCIA Marketing Director Angie Tunink explained that the zoom series is for any farmers who have questions about the organic farming industry.
The live series features board-certified farmers that will share their knowledge and even give you a chance to look at the equipment they use. She mentioned that it’s not too terribly tough to become certified, but there are proper steps that need to be taken and the series will walk through the specifics.
Tunink said that one of the biggest issues farmers have when switching to organic is understanding the rules around that transitional period. “A lot of people are concerned that during the transition years, they’re just not able to have any crops…and that’s not true,” she went on to say, “They can still plant an untreated, non-GMO seed during the transitioning years and still sell that as conventional.”
OCIA’s “Organic Farm Starts Series” begins on Tuesday, May 4th from noon to 3 pm. Registration is open to anyone. You can sign up right here.
