MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Elections Commission is sending out a new batch of address verification cards to inactive voters; those who are registered but haven’t cast a ballot in the last four years.
They are asked to verify their address or be removed from the voting rolls if they don’t respond with 30 days.
In 2019, the last time the mailing was sent out, just 14% responded. Those 98,000 voters who didn’t respond were the subject of a lawsuit about whether their names should be purged from the voter rolls. The state Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that only local election officials can maintain voter rolls. Any voter purge from the new mailing will likely also be challenged in court.
Any voter who is erroneously removed from the voter rolls can still vote on Election Day under Wisconsin’s same-day registration law.
