MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A shift to September isn’t the only new thing that Summerfest organizers will try this year.
For the first time since the American Family Insurance Amphitheater opened a comedian will headline a show on the stage.
Dave Chappelle, who rose to fame as the host of the sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show, will take the microphone on September 11th. Tickets for the show will go on sale later this week with a presale opportunity on June 10th and general sales opening the 11th.
Comedy shows have been a part of Summerfest off and on since the early days. Bob Hope played Summerfest when it was held at County Stadium in 1969. A few years later George Carlin was famously arrested for performing his “Seven Words You Can’t Say on Television” bit in 1972.
Other comedians who have played Summerfest include Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, and SNL alum Tracy Morgan. The last comedian to headline was Lewis Black in 2013.
Those looking to attend Chappelle’s performance should note that his tour has a strict no recording devices policy. Those bringing smartphones or wearables into the venue will be required to lock them in Yondr pouches for the duration of the performance. Anyone caught recording the show by any means will be ejected.
