WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Officials in Marathon County are warning of a new scam as boats return to the water.
The Marathon County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department was informed of a man posing as a Parks Department employee at boat launches throughout the county. The man looks for vehicles that haven’t paid their boat launch permit fee, waiting for them to return to the vehicle, and then demanding a $50 violation fee to him in cash.
Wausau authorities say that the person is not employed by the Parks Department. Official employees of the Parks Department would be in a county vehicle and don’t demand money directly for violations, but would instead issue a notice to the individual.
If you come across the suspect posing as an employee you’re asked to call either the Wausau Police Department or the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.
