WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A rise in accidents is mainly being attributed to one type of driving.
There’s been an uptick in crashes recently across Central Wisconsin and local law enforcement agencies say it’s in part due to distracted driving. Wisconsin State Patrol Sergeant Rhea Stertz tells WAOW-TV it’s best to keep distractions in the car at a minimum through a variety of ways. “It’s best to just limit all of the distractions in the vehicle. If you can keep your eyes on the road.
“The best thing to do is look several seconds ahead of you. So you can see if cars are breaking and you have more time to react because every crash is preventable. That’s on the passenger who need to not distract the driver and the driver needs to limit distractions,”.
Stertz mentions the other leading cause of crashes in the area comes from drunk drivers. “We will usually find one of the two things. They’re either not paying attention when driving or they’re driving impaired. And now you can’t react appropriately because your body is not going to function the same as if you were sober,”.
The recent Click It or Ticket campaign conducted at the end of May had over 1,300 stops with 938 seatbelt violations and 276-speed violations.
