Julia Nunes is the 73rd Alice in Dairyland who unfortunately received the title during the peak of COVID-19 and was unable to attend some of the events Alice would’ve been at in a normal year. Luckily, she was given the opportunity to hold her title for one more year before passing the name to the next woman. In July Nunes will officially be named the 74th Alice in Dairyland for the 74th year of the program.
This year will be a whole new experience for her simply because everything is back up and running with events in full attendance and some normalcy back in our lives. “It’s amazing to be back and going to events. I’ve been to a few Breakfast on the Farms this month in June and I love that. Seeing people and people are excited. Just the overall feeling when you go to an event, people are just happy,” Nunes said. For example, she’ll be out at the Sheboygan County Breakfast on the Farm this Sunday in Elkhart Lake.
“My schedule is busy, but I’m enjoying it because it’s different than this past year has been.”
Another event Nunes was fortunate enough to be a part of was helping the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland from the southern part of the state earn their Dairy Badge. She was in charge of teaching four classes centered around the dairy industry. One of the classes was about science, so she taught the scouts how to make ice cream in a bag. “It was a great opportunity for me to get to meet them,” she said. If the girls completed the courses, they received their Dairy Badge, which is the first of its kind. The program ended with a field trip to a dairy farm where they could ask questions and learn about different careers in the industry.
Nunes hopes the dairy program expands to other parts of Wisconsin in the coming years so more girl scouts can learn about the dairy industry and the role it plays in our day-to-day lives.
