As June Dairy Month is winding down, this year’s Calumet County Sundae on the Farm will be hosted by Woldt Farms LLC in Brillion. The event will take place from 11 am – 3 pm this Sunday, June 27th. The best part, it’s FREE!
The farm was established by Herman Woldt in 1911 and is now owned by Daryl and Amy Woldt, who purchased the dairy from Daryl’s dad, Hugo in 1990. “When I was growing up, I remember my dad milking 32 cows on this farm,” Daryl said. When he and his wife, Amy purchased the farm, they expanded to 80 cows and kept on growing to the 1,500 milking cows they have today.
The Woldt’s hosted Sundae on the Farm back in 1996, but a lot has changed since then. “The reason we wanted to do it again is we hosted it in 1996. Two of the girls were born at that time and during that time we grew from what we were,” Amy explained. The couple has five daughters who also play a role on the farm, Kelsey, Kayla, Kristen, Karly, and Kortney, who are the fifth generation on the dairy.
With larger farms, sometimes there are some misconceptions about the environmental impact, but their daughter Kelsey was explaining some of the practices the farm put in place to be environmentally friendly. “This year we did a lot of cover cropping…and then this spring we were able to no-till corn into them,” Kelsey said. That saves on soil erosion, fuel, labor, and it’s better for waterways.”
Amy mentioned the importance of events such as Sundae on the Farm, “I think it’s important to educate the public about how we care for our cows. Ya know, they think we’re just running a factory here, but it’s not. We have our cows very comfortable out there.” Kelsey added, “A lot of people don’t know where their food comes from, so if they want to learn about that, this is a good opportunity to see how it’s made.”
Kayla explained that on Sunday, they’ll be offering wagon rides through the whole farm to see the operation, the machinery, the feed piles, and of course, the cows. Afterward, they’ll have food, sundaes, a band, and activities for the kids.
