MADISON, WI (WSAU) — It’s “Barry Alvarez Day” in Wisconsin.
The outgoing UW AD is being honored with a proclamation from Governor Tony Evers declaring that today is all about him and his contributions to the Badgers.
It’s hard to overstate the impact and legacy of @UWBadgers Director Barry Alvarez. I'm proud to declare today Barry Alvarez Day, and on behalf of the state of Wisconsin and Badgers everywhere, I wish Director Alvarez all the best in his retirement. https://t.co/2SQCP7eBKR

The proclamation recognizes Alvarez for more than 30 years of service to the University of Wisconsin and his national honors as well. Alvarez is one of just 16 football coaches in the history of the Big Ten Conference to win more than 100 games at one school and has been inducted into five halls of fame including the Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame, Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, and College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
He announced his retirement in the spring of 2021, which officially begins Thursday. The University did conduct a national search for his replacement but settled on an in-house candidate in Deputy Athletic Director Chris McIntosh. He takes over full-time AD duties that same day.
